An Unknown Future

When I was a kid, I remember I always had this dream of being a singer. I wanted to get on stage, perform in front of crowds, and go on tours all over the world. I decided that would be my life. That was always the dream. But reality hits you pretty hard when you grow up. You learn that you have to be realistic. You have to earn a living and make a lot of money to provide for yourself and your family. Your dream changes, but what happens when you don’t know what your new dream is?

Well some people are lucky. They have known what they wanted to do from day one. They got that part all figured out. However, some people (ME) are still trying to figure it out.

Coming to college, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I’ve changed my major twice now, and I still don’t know what to do. I get so frustrated with myself a lot because I can’t seem to figure it all out. I feel like everyone else knows exactly what they want, and I’m the weirdo who can’t figure it out. Its like every time someone asks what I want to do, the only thing I can think of is a big red question mark. And what’s weird is that when I think about the future, I always think “Oh God’s got a plan. He knows exactly whats gonna happen, so I don’t need to worry.”

But I keep worrying about it. I worry about whether or not I will ever figure it out. I worry whether I will make the right decision or if I will regret it. I worry about the future when I don’t need to. It is already planned out by Him.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11

So if we know that God has a plan for us, why do we worry? Why do we get so overwhelmed and freak out because we don’t know what is going to happen?

It is because it is the unknown. We don’t know what is going to happen. We keep overthinking it and worrying about it. We don’t know what the answer is or when we will find it. So what can we do about this?

First of all, if you don’t know what to do, you will figure it out. I know that is such a cheesy thing to say, but you will. One day its just gonna randomly hit you, and you will know. God has a plan, and His timing will work out eventually.

“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.”- Luke 12:32

Second of all, when we are in a period of waiting, we need to look towards Jesus more. Dive deep into the word. Pray. Find peace while you are waiting. There is a song called “A Future Not My Own” by Matt Maher. It basically talks about how our future that we are striving so hard to achieve doesn’t belong to us. It belongs to God. God will use us how He desires to use us, and we need to be obedient to Him. As Christians, we need to live wholeheartedly for God. Living for Jesus is so much greater than anything this world can offer because God will always provide for us.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” – Isaiah 55:8-9

God has the most glorious life for us. He will tell us what we need to do when we are ready. So while you are waiting, dive in deeper and deeper into Him. He will provide for us, and we can find our hope in Him.

Love always,

Claire
